Consciousness is being aware of your own existence in life.

You are conscious if you are able to be aware of worldly events around you.

Kevin Bosl said...

Consciousness is being self aware. it is know who and what you are and having an inner voice with which guides you.

Consciousness is the state of being awake? haha. Idk, tough question. You know you are conciousness because all your senses are being felt by yourself. In a dream-like state you don't really feel everything you kind of just see it.

Dank said...

Consciousness is being able to have a thought proccess. You know you are conscious if you can follow a train a thought.

JGaines, True but there is no way of knowing if the worldy events are real or just in your imagination so a person has no way of proving that they are conscious

jeffrey a said...

Conciousness is being able not only to recongnize ones existance but also to be able to recognize and act on events around ones self.

yeah, but how do u kno its all real?

ctam said...

Consciousness is when a person is aware of his or her surrounding. He or she is aware of how their actions will affect themselves and the people around them.
You know you're conscious because you you can see how your actions affect others. Also the actions that you commit can also affect you internally.

You cannot know anything around you is real. You can only assume.

JGaines1337 said...

Margee if you have higher brain function to have an imagination you posses the capacity to realize your conscious. Consciousness can be seen through our actions. If we assume we are in a dream world nothing would ever get done.

spotts4 said...

people assume things are real and it makes them believe some things are real

jeffrey a said...

If you base your definition of conciousness soley around being able to interpret the world around you then there is no distinguishable diffrence between dream and reality. It is the ability to both interpret and alter ones surroundings that causes one to be considered concious.

Anonymous said...

JGaines, I didn't mean assume a dream world. I meant assume things are real...THANK YOU SPOTTS. All I said was that there is no way of actually proving that anything around you is actually real or just in your imagination.

spotts4 said...

consciousness is when you know an believe the things around you are really there. One knows they are conscious if everything around them is real.

openbook said...

kinda disturbing, but i guess that's true. Like how can u prove it's reality?

Kevin Bosl said...

something is real when we perceive it to be real. are you saying the table in front of you isnt real?

vtracey13 said...

Well I didnt read through everyones but it seems that a underline theme is the idea of sense, but earlier we talked about sleep paraylsis where u are awake but cannot see, hear, feel, smell, or do any movement. I've never had it but I think you are still conscious and aware of it without being able to have any sense.

jbonica said...

I conciousness, believe its an old wooden ship used in the civil war era.

However, according to dictionary.com it is defined as: the state of being conscious; awareness of one's own existence, sensations, thoughts, surroundings, etc.

consciousness is being aware of what is going on around it. its your inner voice that helps you make decisions about what is right and wrong.

Ryan Squirrtle Sullivan said...

consciousness is the little jimminey cricket in all of us. It tells us fom right and wrong and allows us to think and have a feeling of self awareness.

kaitlynb said...

being conscious is being aware of youre surroundings

MakailaC said...

I think conciousness is when your senses are working and you can tell what is going on.

vtracey13 said...

but then is sleep paralysis a state of consciousness?

DONE, I WIN!!!

Mr. Paulson said...

Jeff, if I wanted the definition I would have asked you to look it up. I want your opinion.

Ryan - you are confusing consciousness with conscience. Conscience is your moral inner voice, your Jiminy Cricket. We want to know what consciousness is.

Ryan Squirrtle Sullivan said...

Margee this is not the MATRIX, I am pretty sure that this computer that I am typing on is REALL

vtracey13 said...

Sniping Ryan out, I think consciousness and your conscience are two diffrent things.

jbonica said...

Human consciousness is a cerebral ability with inputs from the approximately 50,000 million cells that constitute an adult body.

kaitlynb said...

val, what is sleep paralysis?

is it when you wake up but you cant move?

Anonymous said...

Consciousness is being awake and receptive to your surroundings/existence.

aqualls said...

you know you are conscious if you like know what is going on, which ties back to what Kevin said of being self aware

Anonymous said...

consciousness is being able to think. it is knowing that you exist. you know that you are conscious because you are thinking about this question

BBrown said...

Conciousness is being able to think coherently, and be able to know what's going on in your surroundings.

Mr. Paulson said...

so, is consciousness just having physical sensation? Is a jelly fish than conscious? It has no brain or nervous system, so as far as we can tell it can't "feel" in the traditional sense. So does it have consciousness? Does a lobster than have consciousness because it does have a brain and nervous system?

Anonymous said...

being aware of your existance...your surroundings

Anonymous said...

i dont think having a brain is the main source of having consciousness...i think its just knowing how to survive and knowing your surrondings...even if you do it through touch

Mr. Paulson said...

how do you "know" anything without a brain?

Liandra P said...

I agree with everyone which is basically that consciousness is being self aware of your surroundings, and knowing you are alive.
You know you are conscious when you have complete control of your body and can control the decisions you make. Once that control is gone, you are no longer conscious.

BBrown said...

Well Mr. Paulson, how does a jellyfish survive without "knowing" its surroundings?

Mr. Paulson said...

that is a good question Bobby, it calls into question the definition of the word "knowing"

JBacker said...

Consciousness is self awareness. It's the ability recognize that you are your own living entity.

You know you're conscious by realizing that you exist and think on your own accord.

Nick Jones said...

Consciousness is the ability to ponder a question or situation, such as, "am I conscious?".

Anonymous said...

Conciousness is when you are, awake, alert and aware of your surroundings. You know your concious because your in the state of mind that you know everything thats goin on around you.

Anonymous said...

Consciousness is being very aware of your own existence in life.

jessica said...

is tht when you have the devil and the angel in ur head and they tell u what to do??

Anonymous said...

yes, jess, thats exactly what it is

jessica said...

yea thts wat i thought it was

Mr. Paulson said...

jess, that is conscience, not consciousness

kgilmore said...

Consciousness is when you are aware of yourself and what you are doing. you kno you are conscious when you are aknowledge of your existance and you can interpret the things around you

kshea said...

Consciousness is how aware of what is going on around you. It shows how it effects yourselves and others.

NonyeO said...

Consciousness is when a person is alve and they are aware, and can observe who or what is around them. You are conscious if you can move and your brain is still functioning.

jessica said...

so in pinochio y does the little cricket say he is his conciousness and he tells him wats good and bad

Anonymous said...

Because Pinochio is a puppet, not a real boy

Mr. Paulson said...

Jiminy Cricket tells Pinocchio that he is his conscience, not his consciousness

khiggs said...

Consciousness is being aware of your surroundings and your life.

You know you are conscious if you can understand the world around you and know your position in life.

jessica said...

Consciousness is when you are aware of what is going on around you. I know that I am conscious because all of my i am aware of whats going on.
