Why was it that while Europe was going through a period (6th - 13th centuries) of slower scientific and philosophical growth, the Arab-Islamic Empire was going through a period (7th century to 13th century) of rapid advancement?

Well the Europeiens were kind of busy with plauges and the war while the Islamic/Arab Empire did have any thing to preoccupie them... Europe was spending there money and in ventions on things that would help them with what they need at that moment... the I/A Empire did not need guns ammunition (ect.) so they could cme with all these new inventions.

Btw the war was the 100yr war

If Ericka is right about the war, then her response probably is correct.

I think the Arab-Islamic Empire may have been hiding their advancements from the Europeans so they have an advantage over them.

Could it have also been that the population of the Arab-Islamic Empire was greater than that of the Europe? Arab-Islamic would have specialized jobs and make advancements faster than Europe.

I went ot look up the populations and i foud a site that had this on it ...The population changed drastically duirng that time. The 100 Years War begins before the Black Death and ends after it. In 1347-1350, at least 1/4 of Europe's population died. This was true in the middle east as well, and the plague had effects all the way to asia. So you'd have to get both "before" and "after" estimates to further complicate things.

soi could not find the numbers but i believe the both had a dis advantage ... the site was

The fact that the plague ends roughly 1350 points to the war which ended 1453 so that was the low point of Europe, then the rest of the time was rebuilding the empire so they had to get a sturdy base before they started having a lot of "scientific groth" again.

The only problem with my theory is, isn't during wasrs the time when there is normally a lot of phosofical groth, because that is somthing people turn to during hard times?

Your ideas about the Black Death and 100 Years War are good ones, but as you pointed out they don't fit the time frame.

Remember the larger topic we are discussing here, which is religion. What religion did most Europeans follow and how might that have affected their advancement (or lack thereof) during that time period? How did Islam view other religious groups at that time? How might that view have lead to their advancement?

The only reason i can find for that is at this point (though I think it is later than 13 century ) is now the theory of evolution is contradicting the bible ... also arn't the phlosophers people wh are exiled from the church? And would that appeal to other religons who are against Christanity?

Also, Mr. Paulson - I don't think it is fair to assume that a deleted comment was deleted because it failed to follow the rules. The person could have just messed up his or her post or made a really bad typo. I personally deleted one of my posts because I tried to answer someone's question but found out that it was wrong and someone else had a better answer.

fair point Ben, I actually learned that I can see your deleted posts, so I will know if they were deleted for incorrectness or inappropriateness.

Since Islam belives that everyone should read the Koran in Arabic, most people knew how to read and were therefore more advanced than Europe. People who could just read learned more and then developed advances.
Or, because the Arab-Islamic empire as a whole was more tolerant of other religions, they had all sorts of people living in their empire from all different places and religions. So with all the different people and different ideas, more scientific advances were made. This is opposed to Europe which did not tolerate other people, and so only had one set of ideas with which to make advances.

was number 52 even answered in the reading help!! and the part about why muslims study science? i got the part for math but not science.
the question answer
because the arab-islamic empire was making money and was a new religion so it was spreading and was getting known better when the Europian went through a very slow period because they were getting old now known anymore so it was the islams who got the more itention and christians were turning into islams too so that might of slowed it down too.
(this is a guess and some of the answer is from the text/reading)

while the Eastern Hemisphere is not mentioned by name, it includes Europe, North Africa, The Middle East, Central Asia and East Asia. So really, the question is, how did the Arab-Islamic Empire encourage and allow trade across the Eurasian continent and North Africa?

Mr. Paulson said...

As for Muslims desire for science, well, there are multiple reasons for it, but if you look into the desires of their leaders and also their religious needs, you will find the answers.

Linda said...

But Mr. Paulson, is my answer for the World History question correct? Or is trade now part of the question?!?

Mr. Paulson said...

sorry Ericka, didn't mean to ignore you

Your answer is pretty solid. Tomorrow in class we'll be discussing the tolerance and scholarship displayed by early Muslims and how that allowed them to learn from other cultures while Europeans were mostly illiterate and often hostile towards other cultures and religions.
